This was a good beer, but like I said, I like fruity beer's. When poured into a frosty glass the red tint of the beer is very evident. I sniff of the top of the glass gives great hints of the raspberry which is present on the first taste. This beer was almost like a fruit drink instead of a beer. There isn't as much of a hint of raspberry as there is a hint of beer. I liked it a lot and I would like to try their cherry fruit ale as well.

Baltika #4 Dark Lager

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_p1Ywk-coyIg/S29ptWkx8eI/AAAAAAAAAE0/SBs6pTY7AQU/s320/IMAG0027.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435679503134355938" />
After the honey beer I tried the Baltika No. 4 Dark Lager. Definitely different from the sweet beer, this beer was a thick dark beer with a definite bitter taste. Not that it was bad, thats just the type of beer it is. The Baltika website says it has a hint of bread and slight bitterness. I guess I didn't really think of the beer as tasting of bread, but I could taste the slight bitterness. It isn't that the beer isn't good, I guess in general I don't care for bitter beers, but it wasn't bad after you start.

Dundee Honey Brown Lager

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_p1Ywk-coyIg/S2zXaPUj-XI/AAAAAAAAAEs/lZEnenZoYzY/s320/IMAG0055.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5434955696118692210" />
Two weeks ago (yea i'm not updating often enough) I tried the Dundee Honey Brown Lager. I normally drink Purple Haze made by Abita. This is also a wheat ale like the apricot ale. However, purple haze has raspberry infuzed in it. A description of the Abbey Ale can be found at the Abita Website. This beer is a nice dark brown and has a thick head. I can definitely smell cloves and hints of what seems like banana bread to me. Defintely smells of fruit. A very different taste from the apricot beer though, thicker and richer. This is fairly good. I would rate it a B in my book.

ResearchTriangleParkNC.com

whatstodotoday.com is officially gone in two days. Oh well. I have created the new page http://www.researchtriangleparknc.com to take its place. Its already shown up in the search engines so its defnitely doing better than the last site. However, one of our favorite places to eat in Holly Springs, La Dolce Vita, closed down. They had really good pizza and we hate that they are gone. They have another resturant in Sanford but we never really head that way.

Total Wine

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_p1Ywk-coyIg/S1I3s8x55VI/AAAAAAAAAEU/nLmyNvAka7c/s320/IMAG0037.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5427461746304083282" />
So I hit the Total Wine with the wife this afternoon for some beer. I was overwhemlmed by the types of beer they have. So I got 12 or so random beers for $40 (no one said they were cheap). So I think I'll use this blog to keep track of these beers and how they are. I actually got the first beer at our local Lowe's foods. The first time I had this beer was out in Seattle on a vacation. Pyramid Breweries makes the Audacious Apricot Wheat Ale and I'm a big fan of it. You definitely get apricot taste (I really like beer with fruit flavors). I'll start with this one tonight and see how the evening progresses.

RTP Railfan Website

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_p1Ywk-coyIg/SzklFS_WxOI/AAAAAAAAAEI/0mi2pvYfM-U/s320/DSC_0057.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420404399444247778" />
I'm actually updating the website more than my blog. Actually I wasn't doing much railfan stuff over the summer. I usually turn the scanner stream off because of the computer in the attic and just doing other things. Recently I turned the stream back on. Right now I have this wierd setup in the side yard. I got the traintenna omni from DPDProductions but I have it mounted on this pole in the yard because I haven't figured out how to get it on the roof yet. In addition, I don't think my HOA would like me mounting it up there. Anyways, I have it connected to a Maxtrac in the garage, not a bad setup but it would be better if the antenna were on the roof. I have also been upading the RTPRailfan site as I have let it go for a while now. Hope to be adding some new material but probably won't completely overhall the site. I've had it running for a few days and it seems like its operating correctly. There seems to be a lot of good scanning around the middle of the day, and during the day on weekdays is good. You can catch the Amtrak going through at 8:30 and 9:30 at night. Weekends are kind of slow sometimes. I'm still working on whatstodotoday.com. I'm having issues getting the Adsense to do what I want it to. I'm trying to figure out how to update the Adsense based on the updates from a MySQL database. This is a dynamic google maps site that required me learning the basics of javascript, php, mysql and refreshing my html and css. That was a lot to learn. I'm definitley not an expert but I have a better understanding of how they work. Anyways, one of the things I added to www.whatstodotoday.com is a "railfan" type. I don't want to go into the specifics of the site, check out http://www.whatstodotoday.com/about_whatstodo.html to see a quick overview. However, the point is railfans currently in the Raleigh or Charlotte area can post google map locations with comments to the site. I think it would cool to add the radio frequencies of trains applicable to this area as well. I think I might add a function like this to www.rtprailfan.com, but this might be a while, as I'm still developing the whatstodotoday site. Anyways, check it out and let me know what you think.

RTPRailfan Forum taken down

Hi yall,

Been a while, been working on a new website. I'll probably leave it up until summer when the heat is too much for the computer in the attic. By the way, I'm setting up a new site called whatstodo_. To be honest, I've been out of the railfanning for a bit. I got that Traintenna in that I paid $170 for and I can't get it to work. It operates horrible and I can't find a thing wrong with it. I gave up so in the mean time I built a new computer. Its pretty nice...

Intel 8500 dual core
4 gigs ram
G260 EVGA video card
750i NVIDIA EVGA MB

It whups my old computer. I play Crysis at 1280x1024 at very high settings with no problem. Awesome computer. So pretty much all I've been doing is gaming for about 3 weeks. My railfan setup is currently using the original radioshack vhf antenna. I've just been recording stuff, not broadcasting but i really should kick it to broadcast because i don't even listen to it....I think I'll do that now.

Gotta love remote computer....http://www.rtprailfan.com....there is a link there to railfan radio. You just have to click that and then click on the "listen" link above...

Railfan Scanning

Well, I received my Traintenna LP but I haven't had much luck in getting it going. This summer has gone by quickly. Had some good times and bad. LeeAnne's grandfather died back in July, that was not a good time. He is missed. On the positive side, both LeeAnne and I have gotten promotions recently. Its always good to feel like you are doing something right. Just this past week I got back from a Washington trip that included some railfanning sidelines to the longest tunnel in the U.S. (Cascade tunnel), hiked up some of Mt. Rainier, and checked out the raillines along the Columbia River. It was a great trip and I plan on updating it on www.rtprailfan.com. I'm not sure how I would do that, I guess my scanner feed would be good enough now. I was thinking more of something you can put on an ipod to hear the previous days action. This would be really great around my area given the scarcity of transmissions sometimes. I went walking around Morrisville today, up near where Park West Village is suppose to go in. Doesn't look like there is much going on, maybe the housing downturn has put that project on hold?? We had a big layoff last Monday but I survived. Hopefully I can make it though this recession. I'll let you know when I get the new antenna set up.

RTP Railfan Radio back online!

I went ahead and put the RTP Railfan scanner stream back online. I'm testing a new VHF antenna I got from RadioShack. This is to replace the Yagi I build that was in my attic. This was the $26 VHF antenna from RadioShack. Seems promising right now, I could hear the Amtrak this morning at the Fairgrounds in Raleigh and all the way to Clegg on the H line in RTP. Eventually I will get the traintenna from DPD Productions but its about $175 for the log periodic. I also need to get the correct Maxtrac installed that allows audio out of the accesory connector. On another note, I heard the Moncure defect detector from Apex, some 20 miles away. First time I've ever heard that one go off.

I'll do more research next time...

Well, it turns out that I bought the wrong Maxtrac. I can belive that. So I got it and it does indeed have better receive sensitivity. I had to gather all the equipment to get it going, radio interface box (RIB), Rib to radio cable (I built), Rib to computer cable (came with the RIB). Then I had to find the software. Took me a while to realize that the way Motorola and others define pins 1-8 on an RJ45 connector is backwards. Anyways, to the good stuff. Last night I hooked it up in my car and I could almost hear a train in Raleigh and I could hear the Cary defect detector no problem. This is a far cry from my scanner where the best I could hope for was Apex. I'm not sure what people have that say they can hear 35+ miles. I can only hear 20 with my maxtrac and a antenna tuned to 160 MHz. How much better can you get than that. Anyways, I'm hoping to get another one of these on the cheap and install it in the attic with the Yagi. This will definitely get better range than my current scanner.

No more Western Digital Hard Drives

Well, I went to Hamlet, NC this weekend and caught the 92 Amtrak running 7 hours late. I was going to post some pictures but my external hard drive failed taking all my old pictures with it. This is the second WD drive to fail on me in the last 3 months. I have had it with them. And to top it off it failed just out of warranty. Of course thats easy to do with a 1 year warranty. The drive started making a wierd noise and now it just does 3 clicks two times in a row and doesn't try anymore. My computer doesn't pick it up at all. We are trying to freezer trick, but to no avail. I guess I'm just out of luck. I'll try to post a pic or two once I get that stuff back in order.

RTP Railfan Radio

So, I have this server up in my attic connected to a Yagi antenna and scanner. Its not the best setup, I can hear Apex, Cary, Raleigh dispatch. I'm getting a Motorola Maxtrac so hopefully this will have better reception. Try it out. You will need WinAmp to listen to it. Doesn't seem like much is going on at night but during the day it picks up a fair amount of local traffic. I'll see how it goes with this server and see if I'll keep it up. Let me know if you have comments. It doesn't have nearly the traffic that the radio servers have around places like Hamlet but it still works.

Slackin

Man, I have been slackin on the website. Hamlet is quite the railfan mecca. I saw at least 5 other people just hanging around watching the trains go by. We were probably only at the station 5 hours total and we must have seen 10-15 trains. They just kept coming and going. Its an ok place to walk around. We also went wandering in the woods west of Hamlet on the near the tracks by the Pee Dee River. That was very interesting. Our feet were caked with about 3 inches of mud and the briars were merciless. Worse so for me because I was wearing shorts. We did see two freights out there, but there isn't a good place to view the bridge. All i all a good weekend though.

RTP Scanner Radio is ONLINE!

I finally got the RTP Railfan radio online. I need to work more on rtprailfan now that I have the railfan radio online.

Can't work on website, building Yagi Antenna

Well, I read online that some people were using Yagi antenna's for receiving talk over the AAR channels. I took some railfan trips, to Hamlet, Aberdeen, followed the Durham and Southern from Apex to Dunn, NC, went to Selma, NC on the old ACL mainline. It was quite a vacation. I have a ton of stuff to update http://www.rtprailfan.com/ with. Also, the search engine optimization we did is paying off, for some reason i'm highly ranked for "amtrak cary." I guess because of the one article I have on amtrak and Cary, NC. I went there also. I also am working on a video page but I did some stupid stuff the other night in Dreamweaver and I screwed up one of my CSS pages. I need to fix that tonight. Hope everyone had a good holiday and check out the page, I'll have new stuff soon.

Morrisville NC Development

I have to say I am rather upset to see this. Not that i'm suprised because of the ridiculous amount of growth that is going on in Morrisville. I heard there are going to be no trees left there an I believe it. Recently I saw this in a news article and its rather depressing. I large section of an area that I use for walking/railfanning is going to be used for a retail development. I hate that they are doing this but I guess there isn't much we can do. Castro Lifestyle Properties is developing this section of Morrisville that I have visited many times. Actually I will only probably get in a day of it with all the other things I have to do. Oh well. My railfan site is making progress each day, although I have taken a bit of a break recently. I need to get the title navigation bar working and the site map built but other than that I think its pretty much laid out. For my railfan site, I want to have it be interactive for users. The way the site is set up is you have articles and every article has a description of what you saw and what the area was like. Along with this you have a picture gallery and a google map to show exactly where it is. I am going to create, somehow, a main page that is just one big google map with place markers. Every place marker will pop up a balloon when you click on it and the balloon will have a link that goes to the article. I think that will be really cool for seeing railfanning locations around you. The problem right now is getting traffic to the site. Time to do more search engine optimization. On a different subject, I think the railroad people must know I sit out and railfan at lunch because I haven't seen a train in more than a week and a half. Its getting old, I think I'll have to switch times.

RTP Railfan

Finally, I have something to show for my effort. http://www.rtprailfan.com is sorta finished. I have some bugs and some of the links don't link to anything but I have the main page up and 3 articles. Hopefully I can get the last of the articles that I wanted to do completed soon. I took a break for a while, had other things going on. In antenna news, I got my Smiley antenna tuned to 160 MHz in. Its pretty nice, I can definitely hear more of what is floating around the airwaves than I could with my Diamond. I think I heard the dispatcher in Raleigh the other day but that my have been a fluke because I haven't heard anything recently. I also have a mag mount for my car that helps when I'm driving around. Pretty nice. Well thats about all thats happening. I've been reading about keyword association with your site and it seems difficult. I guess it just takes time. I'm still working on my website but its slow going. I don't know how to use the programs very well so there is a very steep learning curve. I'm still trying to figure out how exactly I want to lay it out. I'm thinking if I can just get the page overview together, I'll go ahead and launch it. On a different subject all together, I'm still waiting on my mag mount antenna with BNC connector. I also got a 5/8 wavelength antenna custom build for 160 MHz resonance frequency. I'm hoping this will do much better than my Diamond antenna hooked to my scanner in the car. I just don't think I'm getting the range I'm supposed to be getting. You can get really cool results though by using Photoshop. I have a Nikon D80 camera and I have some cool shots of train related stuff. I incorporated some of those photos in and it turned out really good. I think the website if gonna be cool. I think its just a matter of me coming up to speed with the programs. I hope to have it up soon. I'm going to incorporate some flash and movies. Hopefully that won't be too difficult. I also hope to get enough traffic to make some money from adsense. I need to get a domain host too.

I think I am going to take a more active role in the internet. I've been reading about Google AdSense and I really want to see what its all about. I'm going to create some webpages about specific topics that interest me and see how it goes. Specifically railfanning in the Research Triangle Park area. This will include my interest in scanners and all things RF. My brother has become quite the artist in the past few years and I want to see if I can setup a website to sell some of his work. Maybe I can get him interested in painting railroad scenes. I think he wanted to do that anyways. I should also be posting to this blog more often.

By the way, In the Springs, come from the area I live. Holly Springs, NC, one of the up and coming areas around Research Triangle Park.

E62

I got this E62 about a month ago from Cingular and man was it a piece. Nothing worked on it, except the internet. Got to reading and found there are ways. I guess there are always ways. Just needed some different firmware. Now the phone is working great. I had to go around Nokia because they were in cohorts with Nokia to kill this phone. The wouldn't update the software at all, I guess they just wanted it to die. Sweet interface though and coupled with GPS you can see exactly where you are on a satellite view. Now I just need to get google maps to have GPS for symbian.
